I've not done any research for this yet, I've been in a bit of a crash health wise, not out of the woods yet. I really do want this to come off, even if it is just a small number of us. My kind of plan is to go round it in the spring myself looking for interesting and varied attractions to see/do each day as well as time for folk to do their own thing. Maybe about 5 night's camping, the last in Inverness where we could go into town for a meal/pint.

Davie,

Do you want suggestions, ideas from other members familiar with the area. I will be moving up to the Helmsdale area possibly springtime and I have holidayed in the north as well and can provide some knowledge.

Yes, if anyone has any suggestions on things to see and do please post them. The thing I want to go to is cape wrath. The only way to get to it is a small passenger ferry then I think it's 12 mile minibus ride. I've been under cape wrath on a boat, I went to see the view from the top!

That is a must for me, I read an account of that very trip to Cape Wrath by a cyclist who rode right around the coast of the UK... The trip is rough as it was in a Sherpa mini-bus and the road, such as it is, is very bad due to the area being a bombing range! There's a lot of bomb craters along it...

Yes, but a lovely one... I'd be happy to do it... The other resident of Cape Wrath runs a small café in the old lighthouse accommodation building to cater for the visitors who come along on the mini-bus... I'd be even happier to do that job as well...

I did just that trip decades ago (in a Mini): small foot-passenger ferry-boat across the strip of water, and then minibus up to the Cape tip.
Not far away, right up the top of the 'mainland' is Balnakiel - was an old WW2 radar station, and a craft village, and an essential cafe/restaurant Something else for Jim, if it's all still there. I expect Streetview would reveal all...

It's all sounding rather like an itinerary. Sorely tempted, even from here . . . Do we have any takers and/or dates?

Yes, me in the Activa with bike so long as the dates don't clash with three runs (including a half-marathon) and a cycle sportive I've already entered next year!

For the Yes's, why don't we post dates we cannot make, so Davie can go from there?
Presume we're taking about the June to September slot?

I'm really thinking September. Scotland often gets bettwrbin September than July or August. And with kids at school there's not hoards of noisy kids on campsites. My thought is to meet in Fort William on a Sunday, start with a trip up the funicular railway on annoch mor on Monday morning, if it's clear weather the views up there are spectacular and well worth it. From there head north, but not to Inverness, pick up the official nc500 heading for Applecross for camp on night 2.that's about all I have thought so far, apart from cape wrath. I was thinking driving a maximum of about 3 hrs a day, although we can drive more off route exploring locally which folk could do individually or as a group. I suppose the best thing would be to set a date first so folk can plan a week off. It's going to take that to get to fort William on the Sunday, then home from Inverness the next weekend. I am intending driving round it in the spring and timing the drives and picking up loads of leaflets and looking at camp sites. That's for me how September sounds best. If someone could perhaps do a vote, for interested parties to vote on for the weekends in September that may well set a date.

That's looking good. A suggestion: how about meeting up in Stirling (or Doune or Crianlarich) so we could enjoy the run up and over Rannoch Moor and down through Glencoe together? Just an idea.

September a good choice, weather-wise - usually much better than July-August.

Well my suggestion then is fort william on sunday 3rd september. Im not sure about meeting in Stirling, although there is services there which would be comvienent. If I were coming from south I think I would be coming M74, then M73 to M8 and west of Glasgow, over the erskine bridge and up the A82 to Fort William. Then again anyone from NE England would find Stirling as easy I suppose. I'm just thinking in my head at the moment, I would need to consult a map. I would happily run south to meet in the Glasgow/Stirling area.
