Sunday 3 September is ok with me, too, and Ft.Wm. as a starting point (just a short hop from here! ).
How are we tackling the overnights - tents, caravans, or . . . ?

September is good for me.

I really really really enjoyed driving the XM around Scotland in 2012 I'm getting child like excitement even just thinking about visiting there again!

I'll take the Peugeot 605 I think.

Hi Guys,

On BBC 2 Scotland there has been a programme by Cameron McNish called Roads less travelled. In these 2 espisodes he goes up Sutherland, Caithness and the Orkney Islands.

Suggest having look to give a flavour of the east coast side of the trip

Tried to get link but failed.

I've not been well recently and thought absolutely nothing about this. My vote does go for fixing the date for the 3rd September meeting in Fort William. Camping or caravanning for accommodation but be aware that some of the roads wouldn't be very suitable for caravans, as an experienced caravanner I would tow all the way but I wouldn't attempt taking a huge caravan. If my berlingo hadn't gone bang I was going to convert it into a mini camper which would have done the job well. I do have a towbar I can fit to the activa if I can lay my hands on a small caravan. I may well do this anyway in case I come down to any rallys this year. It's all up in the air just now until my health improves a bit again.

Hi Davie,

Sorry to hear you've been below par. A caravan could be a bit of a challenge on the route, and maybe no-no for up and over Applecross . . .

Image
. . . but even that isn't insuperable (not a good choice of word, perhaps), as the road through Applecross loops around the north of the peninsula, and rejoins the main road north 7.5 miles further on. Caravanners could temporarily park their vans at Shieldag, and rejoin the party for the up-over-and-around. The road to/from Shieldag is a good one.

Im 50/50 for 3rd September, as in it's probably good but my current job ends in June. I'll do my best to make sure I've the first 2 weeks of September off but cannot guarantee it. I will be choosing the camping option and maybe a B&B once or twice when I'm starting to get a bit smelly.

I wish you a speedy recovery Davie, it's no fun being ill.

Manali to Leh in North Eastern India is my dream bike ride. It's the highest motorable road in the World and quite a Buddhist area. I already cycled part of the Karakorum Highway in Pakistan from Gilgit to Chitral which gave me the Himalayan bug. Living in Wales happened a fortnight after I returned, I'm addicted to mountains.

Oops I didn't realise we were talking Scotland. If I have a bike by then I'd love to join you for the ride. New bikes are high on the agenda, a Spa Cycles Audax and an Mtb for me please. Boss visited yesterday and seemed impressed with the progress on the site, should be talking pay rises soon when I've hit my 6 month targets in 3 months.

Hope you can soon get a new bike James... We can then ride out together down your way then ;) I am smooth road only with mine though... Neither will go off-road at all...

I keep putting it off Jim. It's hard to accept a mediocre bike when you've had Kleins, Santa Cruz, Litespeed, Rocky Mountain and all the rest of it including one off hand builds. Got to start somewhere though, not many people just buy a £5k bike they must be collected, upgraded and built over many years. I'll bite the bullet soon but theres a lot of bills and a V6 to deal with first.

Yes, I know exactly James... I've just treated myself to a new bike and spent an awful lot of money. It's all carbon and titanium and weighs just 6.6Kg! I've realised my dream of owning a top-end bike and now I could never go back to the run of the mill stuff...

Something I'd love to do Kenny, I still want to ride up Mont Ventoux but sadly, I can't travel overseas so that's a dream that will never be realised...

This year I may try to ride a stage or two of the 2016 Tour of Britain instead...
