It's been my way for years Jim, I started with a 2001 Klein attitude race and built up a full XTR group set, Chris King Headset, Thomson and Easton finishing kit and hand built my own wheels. Then it was just a case of getting different frames and forks to swap the good bits over. I've had many bikes beyond my financial means by building them myself and buying well priced parts opportunistically. I totally intend to start again with the Audax and then an MTB, mustn't get carried away though as I fancy a trials bike too and it's addictive. At my peak I had 12 bikes of varying vintage and quality, this time I fancy an audax and a short travel full sus xc MTB. I'll get the Audax ok, then the MTB then slowly upgrade both.

For a while I was riding a vitus frame the first chemically bonded the same type Sean Kelly rode in the grand tours. It was extremely light and when I first started using I had to check it was still underneath me. That was a weird experience. The frame eventually gave way the bond went at the front forks.

Bike riding is very addictive and I can't wait for better weather to get going again.

It's an in-built problem: really remote and scenic area with single-track roads gets discovered, and...
Back in the 70s, the Isle of Skye had only one good wide road running from Broadford Bay up to Portree, and the rest was single tarmac track, with passing places. The north of the island, including the fabulous Quirang and round to Uig, was quite an adventure by car. Now, you can drive this on a wide road, at anything up to 60mph. You have to go looking for extensive bits of quiet, narrow road. I think the SW bit of the island (Sleat peninsula) is still more or less as it was.

Remember exploring by car north of Ullapool, up through the Summer Isles and onwards to Durness. You could then drive for an hour and only see one or two other cars.

Do hope the Top Gear brigade aren't in evidence when we go!

Ahh! I believe the setting for my all-time favourite film - the 'Wicker Man', the original 1970s one with the memorable Britt Ekland scenes and not the remake...

Ahh!
Peter Sellers got there first. The two of them lived in the small Surrey village of Elstead, in a house once owned by Ringo Starr. The Woolpack at Elstead was our local, years later.

Lucky old Peter Sellers is all I can say!

I always thought the same about Chris Evans once being married to Billie Piper...

And who was lucky enough to be married to my especial teenage lust Sally Thomsett - she of the Railway Children?

Showing my age now!

A slightly off topic, whilst travelling to Kirtomy near Bettyhill last April we met a herd of highland cows with the farmer (near Altnaharra) Our GSD started barking but the third bark was very muffled as he had seen the size of the bull.

I asked the wife to take a photo but she was so shocked she didn't hear me. to say he was big was an understatement. I grew up around cows and bulls and I have never seen a bull so big. He knew it as well!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! The gap between his horns was at least 4 1/2 feet.

The farmer stated he had walked the herd about 12 miles.

Kenny, never worry about going off-topic - it is positively encouraged, especially for things like that!

Sunday 3rd September is out for me as I've already committed to being at the Bo'Ness Hill Climb. I could however get up at the crack of dawn on Monday 4th and catch everyone up. :)
