dead gearbox

Post by lara » 07 Apr 2002, 22:37

I have a 1.4 Bx 1991, my garage has confirmed the gearbox is gone. The car does not move in gear, just makes grinding noises and the speedo goes up.
How easy is it to fit another gearbox?
Can I fit a gearbox from any Bx? I have been offered one from a scrap 1.9 Diesel.

Hi Lara - Having nothing but diesels in the family, I'm not to sure about petrol BX's, but I think the 1.4 BX is the one with the gearbox in the engine sump, sharing the same oil. If this is so, a diesel gearbox will not fit.

Hi
Lara again
The gearbox is next to the engine on this particular model, its a K1G 1.4 later type engine/ gearbox and uses seperate transmission oil from the engine.

Diesel Box won't fit. You need another box from a BX 14 88>, an AX 1.4 or anything with a 1.4TU engine (205, Zx 1.4 etc all fine).
Not a difficult job, box needs to be removed from side of engine by means of disconnection of speedo and clutch cables, draining of gearbox oil, removal of driveshafts (check the inner splines on the shafts when you remove them, this may be the cause of your drive problem if one of the splines has gone!), then unbolting and removing the old gearbox.Good idea to fit new clutch when the box is out, again clutch failure may be cuase of problem?
When refitting replacement box, remember to fit new driveshaft seals and 2 litres of gearbox oil!!
Good luck! <img src=icon_smile.gif border=0 align=middle>
